Our guide to the weather and climate in La Palma

La Palma is a beautiful island that makes up part of the ever-popular Canaries. Its full name is San Miguel de La Palma and nicknamed La Isla Bonita, translating to beautiful or pretty island.

It is one of the smaller islands and was declared a biosphere reserve in 2002 by UNESCO. The natural surroundings, beautiful landscape and beaches are enough to tempt you to a holiday here all year round.

Sea temperature

You’ll see a mixture of weather at the start of January – more chance of rain and cloud combined with sunny periods. Daily temperatures of 18°c and 5 hours of sun throughout the day will still be enough to drag you away from what you’re used to in winter.

Take into consideration that there could be up to 5 days of rain during the month and at 13° the sea will be too cold to swim in – you shouldn’t have any problem booking accommodation with a heated pool though and there will be plenty of things to do on cloudy days.

Heading to the beach should be on your to do list, especially if you visit the southwest where you’ll get the most hours of sunshine. Charco Verde is a great choice in January, surrounded by nature and cliffs, you’ll find 150m of black sand encased in a delightful cove and with temperatures reaching highs of 20°c it will be a pleasant day out.

If you prefer a bit of discovery while holidaying, we’d suggest visiting the island’s capital Santa Cruz de La Palma – here you’ll find cobbled streets, manor houses, and balconies full of colourful flowers, along with museums and churches. The climate will be comfortable enough to walk around for as long as you need, while taking in some beautiful sights.

Sea temperature

The temperatures remain the same this month, making January and February the coldest of the year. Saying that though, you will get an extra hour of sun per day and on average you’ll only see 4 days of rain over the whole month.

You’ll undoubtedly enjoy the beach, although you won’t need to cool off in the sea, which is a good job considering it’s still a bit too cold at 13°c. Visit Zamora Beach if you enjoy the quiet life – divided into two parts you access this beach by several steps, to find a tranquil part of the island.

For a more active day trip, you could visit Cumbre Vieja Natural Park – an ideal place if you are an avid hiker. Here you can choose one of the routes to lead you amongst the volcanic cones and craters while observing some breathtaking views. Be mindful that it can get a little breezy in February so just remember to pack a jacket if you do go on an adventure.

Sea temperature

As spring approaches, the temperatures will only marginally rise so you probably won’t feel much difference from February. You’ll see a mixture of sun and cloud throughout the first half of the month, with possible highs of 21°c more likely to happen towards the end of the month.

The sea remains cool which means you won’t really want to swim in it just yet. Again, you’ll get 6 hours of sun and a few days of rain – this shouldn’t bother you too much though. If you do get a cloudy day but don’t want to miss out on making the most of your trip, then head to the Island Museum (Museo Insular) where you can learn about the culture of La Palma. This is the largest museum on the island that offers local history, art, and archaeology.

Even on cloudy days you will still be able to enjoy the beach, and if you do get a day with clear skies, the sun will be lovely to relax under, play beach games, and soak up the atmosphere. Playa Nogales on the northwest coast is an ideal location – there are stunning views and natural beauty thanks to its black sand and turquoise water. Exploration of the caves is highly recommended too and those of you that enjoy hiking, can follow the trail to the top of the cliffs for more beautiful scenery.

The waves may be too strong for swimming but because the sea will still be too chilly for even a quick dip, this won’t affect you. This beach is really a spot for those that appreciate sightseeing and landscapes.

The hours of sunshine you get in April rises to 7 per day, the number of days of rain will decrease too which makes April a really nice month to travel – especially considering the UK is most likely still quite cold.

Though you can spend most of your time outdoors during any month in La Palma, April is particularly good because the pleasant temperatures mean you won’t be too uncomfortable to walk around for long periods – and this is exactly what you can do at Cascada de los Tilos – a must see on the island. You’ll experience the stunning waterfall as well as the natural beauty around you. It’s recommended you get there early because it is one of the most visited attractions and may get busier as the day goes on. The trails offer shaded paths and tunnels leading to mountain views and green landscape.

Before the Easter holidays you should still be able to get a good deal and accommodation can be sought close to the beach – why not try Los Canajos Beach which is one of the most popular in La Palma. It offers useful facilities, a promenade, lovely scenic views, and enough shops and restaurants to keep you entertained all day.

If the Easter break is your first trip away of the year, then you’ll be in for a treat. It may be a little busier as families take advantage of the sun, but the processions and festivities will be something to remember.

With the sea temperature remaining the same since January, you won’t want to dive in yet, but average temperatures of 18°c and highs of 21° make April a great time to enjoy the island.

The Owlet April is a brilliant month to visit La Palma. With temperatures in the low-twenties, it's warm enough to explore at any hour of the day without getting over-heated. Expect sunshine in between the clouds, but visiting Palma is a great way to avoid the rain. The Owlet

At last, the sea temperature increases, although it is still a little cool at 15°c, but you may at least be able to dip your toes in! We also see the daily highs rise to 22° and with lows of 17°, you should only need some light clothing in case you get a little chilly in the evening.

Throughout the day you’ll enjoy 7 hours of sun, and with only 1 day of rain forecast for the entire month, we’d say May is one of the nicest times to visit ahead of the busy main season.

To make the most of your time in La Palma you could visit Tazacote – there are so many things to see and do. Your attention will be drawn to the green of the banana trees and the scenery encased in the squares and avenues. You can also discover museums, manor houses, churches and so much more, that you may have to come back another day to fit it all in.

For those of you that prefer the outdoors we’d suggest exploring Playa de los Guirres – a black sand beach that will give nature lovers a day to cherish. Breathtaking views and clear blue waters are all surrounded by a rugged coastline and hills.

Because there are no facilities on the beach, as well as being tucked away and only accessible by a steep path, this beach is a hidden gem on the island where you enjoy peace and quiet. If you stay long enough too, you’ll witness the beautiful colour of the sky as the sun sets.

Sea temperature

There will be a gentle breeze in June, but temperatures may rise a little, so you’ll probably welcome a little wind, especially if you’re spending most of your day in the sun.

The chance of rain is slim from now on, and with less clouds you can really think about working on your tan with no interruptions. The sea has now jumped a few degrees higher meaning you may want to brave the sea. If you don’t think it’s warm enough yet, but don’t want to miss out on a swim you could head to Charco Azul on the northwest coast – a natural rock pool at the edge of the sea which is enclosed to hold a sheltered swimming area. It is warmed by the sun, and you’ll also find there are areas for sunbathing dotted around, and while there isn’t any sand here, you’ll still be able to catch the rays and enjoy a dip in the warmer water.

We all know that most holidays are centred around the beach, but if you take a look in the opposite direction, you’ll find something very spectacular – the sky to be exact. If you book a trip to Roque de los Muchachos you’ll get to view some wonderful scenery on the way up, guided tours around the observatory and telescopes to see some memorable sights. Thanks to the skies being clear this month stargazing will be a pleasure and you’ll get some great pictures too.

Another suggestion is visiting Maroparque Isla de la Palma which is home to exotic animals and birds – another day out that the whole family will love.

Summer has arrived and the climate, while not reaching the hottest, is still nice enough to let you leave with a tan! The temperatures are in the 20’s now, as well as the lows, and you’ll be glad to know you should only need your shorts and t-shirts from here on in.

With zero days of rain and little chance of too much cloud, let’s head to Puerto Naos Beach to make the most of the 8 hours of sunshine. Located on the west coast you’ll find this destination popular with families, especially when school holidays begin. The sea is now an inviting 21°c and because the waters are calm here, there will be a lot of tourists enjoying the beach. Along with sun loungers and umbrellas to rent, you can also take advantage of the amenities close by. If you’d like to try water sports, this is a great location for beginners.

Those looking for a bit more activity should visit Caldera de Taburiente National Park – perfect for nature lovers where you can hike, discover the landscape, see waterfalls, volcanic craters, and wildlife. Take a picnic to enjoy by the river or cool off in one of the pools. The possibilities are endless here for adventure enthusiasts or those enjoying a peaceful retreat.

The humidity rises throughout July, but with a light breeze it won’t be too uncomfortable to enjoy the island.

The weather in August is hot, though not too stifling, making it an ideal destination for those that don’t want the temperatures too high. If you do want the heat reaching into the early 30’s, then it may be worth looking at other parts of the Canary Islands.

You’ll find that the climate is fairly consistent from one day to the next, so you’ll be pleased to know that you can relax on the beach every day of your holiday if you so choose. A beautiful and tranquil beach is found on the west coast – Playa de le Veta. The sea is excellent for swimming thanks to its 22° temperature and calm waters. It’s recommended you try snorkelling here because the water is so clear, and you’ll see ample marine life.

Because you can only reach the cove by foot, it means it will be quieter than the more accessible beaches, so you’ll find a more secluded and peaceful place that offers a black sand beach and natural beauty.

If you’re not a fan of sand, then head to La Fajana Natural Pools which will let you cool down while having fun in the 3 pools that cater for all abilities.

When you need a break from the sun, why not visit La Palma Naval Museum located in the capital. Here you can immerse yourself within the maritime history and learn about the relationship between La Palma and the sea.

With only a gentle breeze, beautiful sunshine and August being the main summer season, you’ll want to book your holiday early.

The climate for September is very similar to that of August. You get mid 20’s temperatures all day and the lows will only drop by a couple of degrees. With 7 hours of sunshine, you’ll be able to soak up the rays on the beach and if you’re looking for suggestions, try Bazamar Beach. With the usual amenities on offer, parking facilities, children’s playground, promenade, and restaurants nearby, this beach has everything you need for a great day out. The sea is a comfortable temperature to swim in – just don’t forget your suncream and swimming gear!

This month would be a great time to go on a boat tour to experience whale or dolphin watching. Thanks to the waters being so clear around the island, you’ll be able to make the most of a glass bottom boat tour, along with seeing some wonderful scenery.

Hiking is a popular activity in La Palma and with good reason. There is an abundance of trails to choose from and you’ll find your senses are awakened by the scents of pine forests, the sounds of birdlife singing, and the sights of landscape and hidden gems all over the island.

La Palma won’t be too busy as schools open back up, making September a good time to enjoy the weather before things change (only slightly though) from autumn onwards.

Sea temperature

You’ll find that temperatures are still in the early 20’s, although there will also be a rise in the number of days it’s likely to rain over the month, especially towards the end. Don’t let this put you off – you’ll get a good deal on accommodation and flights, as well as enjoying the island without it being too hot.

You’ll be able to walk, hike, or cycle around the island comfortably and with 6 hours of sunshine per day, there will be plenty of time to fit everything in.

Thanks to October being one of the less windy months, you could go on a kayaking tour and coast along the edges of La Palma, taking in surroundings of the fishermen’s sea caves. If you’d rather keep your feet on dry land, visit one of the many beaches dotted around the island.

Another must see attraction in La Palma is the Fuencaliente Lighthouse located in the south. This iconic landmark offers history, as well as panoramic views from the top of the tower and dramatic landscape of the nearby cliffs. You will also notice the original lighthouse here too, both overlooking the salt pools.

It is worth noting that the sea temperature drops from now and you may want to find other activities to do than swim in the sea. You can still visit the beach however, as the sun will be warm enough. Try one of the youngest beaches on the island – Echentive Beach – nestled amongst volcanoes in the south. Accessed by several steps, it is a place to come for some peace and quiet, and October is the ideal month to travel if that is the kind of holiday you’re looking for.

If the cold is too much to bear in your part of the world, then grab your passport and head to La Palma. With the temperatures remaining stable you’ll be able to enjoy some much-needed sun. You will only get 5 hours but comparing that to the weather where you live, we’re sure you’ll enjoy every second!

Towards the middle of November, you’ll notice it becomes cloudier and there will be an increased chance of rain – you could see 7 rainy days over the month. Take this into consideration when booking your getaway. If you want to spend long days on the beach, you’re probably better off travelling during the summer months.

The sea temperature drops to 16°c, which most find too cold for swimming, thankfully though, you’ll be able to keep yourself occupied on the island.

Hiking and walking trails will feel more comfortable now – you won’t have the hotter temperatures or high UV index to contend with, although it is advised to bring a jacket because the climate may drop the further up the mountains you go.

Because temperatures could still reach highs of 23° throughout the day, you’ll still be able to hit the beach. Bear in mind that the sun will set a lot sooner than the summer months so you may want to start your day a little earlier to make the most of it. You will get to witness some beautiful sunsets while you’re here though.

You can easily spend the day in Puntagorda for its various activities. Try visiting the farmers market, El Fayal recreational area, parks, and sports centres. If you’re a thrill seeker you can partake in the zip line jump, enjoying the views from above.

Warm weather is still on the cards throughout December. Average temperatures sit at 18°c, with highs hovering at 20°. You’ll still see 5 hours of sun per day and while it’s decreased from the pervious month, you’ll find it is still pleasant. The sea temperature however is too cold for most therefore, it is recommended you find accommodation with a heated pool if you enjoy swimming.

You could see rain during your December getaway, with rainfall occurring over 8 to 10 days, making this month the wettest of the year. This is good to know when deciding whether to travel, but also remember that it will probably not be raining in the same place all at once, so you’ll find something to do in most parts of the island.

If you do happen to get a rainy or cloudy day, then try one of the many museums – La Palma really is an island full of discovery. The Mojo Museum and Coffee Liqueur is in Tazacorte and not too far from the Banana Museum.

If you’d rather spend your time outdoors then head to Brena Baza where you can take a stroll along the sand on nearby beaches, or marvel at the hillsides and volcanic cones – hiking to its peak will give you some amazing views.

Spending winter in La Palma will be very different to what you’re used to and once you’ve experienced all it has to offer, you’ll no doubt look forward to the next winter!
