July is one of the best months to visit the Azores when the weather is warm, and the foliage is lush. If you want to spend time at the beach and swim in the sea, then July and August are ideal times to explore these sub-tropical islands. Temperatures reach highs of 24˚C during the day, which means it’s lovely and warm without being too hot. July is also the driest month of the year, so you won’t have to contend with much rain during your stay.

What should I pack for a holiday in Azores in July?
As with any warm destination, you’ll want to pack lots of lightweight, loose clothing to keep cool in the heat of the day. For women, skirts, shorts, and dresses are recommended, with a cardigan and leggings for cooler evenings. Men will be happy with shorts and t-shirts, plus a sweater just in case the temperature does dip later in the day. Hiking boots and thick socks are a must if you plan on exploring any of the volcanic walking trails, and of course swimwear is essential for the beaches and pools. Take sunglasses and a sun hat to ward off the rays and top up the sunscreen regularly when you’re out and about. Finally, although it rarely rains in July, it’s a good idea to pack a light waterproof jacket, and perhaps a small umbrella that can be carried in your day bag.

Although July is peak season in the Azores, it never feels crowded, even on the main island of Sao Miguel. This is a great time for island hopping, with ferry and plane routes all in operation. Outside of summer, transport options are reduced, so if you visit in July, you’ll have more choice and flexibility when it comes to journeying around the Azores. One of the highlights of a July holiday is seeing the famous hydrangeas that line the roads and hillsides of the islands. These colourful blooms make the volcanic landscapes even prettier so keep your camera handy.

How warm is it in the Azores during July?
The temperature is extremely stable in July with average highs of 22℃ and lows just 1℃ lower at 21℃. The UV index will be moderate at this time of year, so not something to worry about for the average person. However, if you're going to be outside for long periods it's worth wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses. Remember that bright surfaces, such as water and sand increase UV exposure.
